A person-centred framework providing long-term support to people with complex needs, focused on quality of life.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a framework that provides long-term support to people with complex needs, recommended for those who display behaviours of concern that pose a risk to themselves or others.
Its fundamental aim is to improve quality of life — for the individual and for those supporting them. PBS does this through a person-centred approach that puts the person first: their views, needs and wants. In practice, our practitioners work collaboratively with the individual and those around them so that strategies “wrap around” the person and suit the setting. We develop, support and review PBS plans across residential care, supported living and family homes.
While developing plans, our practitioners observe, assess and analyse behaviours of concern using behavioural psychology techniques including Applied Behaviour Analysis. Depending on need, the team works alongside speech & language therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists and others.
Beyond analysing behaviours of concern, PBS focuses on identifying and building strengths — such as emotional regulation, resilience and goal-setting — and proactively avoiding situations that have previously been difficult to manage. This positive approach minimises the use of restrictive practices.
To ensure a unified approach, our PBS team provides training, support and mentoring to staff teams and family members implementing PBS. Our experienced practitioners receive external specialist consultation and supervision and are engaged in accreditation training.
