A tertiary specialist service for autistic adults with complex presentations, where other services have been unable to meet their needs.
The Kent and Medway Complex Autism Service (KAMCAS) is a tertiary specialist service commissioned to support adults with complex presentations and a confirmed autism diagnosis, where other mental-health and care professionals have been unable to meet the person's needs effectively.
We provide consultation and a range of autism-adapted interventions not available from primary or secondary services. Our primary aim is to help clients and professionals prevent admissions or re-admissions to secure settings such as mental-health hospitals or the criminal justice system.
Commissioned to deliver KAMCAS since 2018, we work in collaboration with agencies across Kent and Medway to support community independence for autistic adults with co-existing diagnoses, where secondary services have exhausted their resources and are seeking autism expertise beyond what they can offer.
We take a person-centred approach through a team of experienced, autism-trained clinical and forensic psychologists, assistant psychologists, occupational therapists, a speech & language therapist, PBS practitioners and a case manager. We assess each person's needs and offer interventions from the appropriate discipline(s).
Referrals must come from secondary care services — for example adult social care or community mental-health teams. We cannot accept referrals from GPs, acute hospital settings or individuals. To support long-term outcomes and manage risk, referred adults must remain open to a secondary team for the duration of KAMCAS involvement. Appointments can be offered at our Kings Hill office, online, or in community settings including homes and supported-living placements.
